How To Cut Hair Using Adobe Photoshop Tutorial

If you are a graphic designer or are you studying to become a graphic designer, you had to cut out an image with Adobe Photoshop and the best tool for that is the Pen Tool, but there are some images with a lot of small edges or details and cutting them with the pen tool can be a very annoying activity.

As I make a daily poster design on my Instagram account and I really like the Digital Collage style I had to cut a lot of images in Photoshop and many of them were people photography, and some of them were easy to cut with the pen tool, others can be more difficult because of the hair, that is why I prepared these Ultimate Guide to help you cut the hair in your images faster and with great results with my favorite 3 techniques to cut hair in adobe photoshop.

1. Pen Tool

Many of you already know the pen tool, because it is the easiest way to cut an image in Photoshop with excellent results so let’s start with the pen tool tutorial.

We will use this image for the tutorial, and the first we need is to select the pen tool that you will find in the image and select the path mode.

Once we selected the pen tool in adobe photoshop, we need to trace the outline of the object or in this case the man of what we want to cut. This is done using points called nodes and every time we click on the image we create a new node, that will help us to outline what we want.

Once we have outlined all the parts that we want to cut from the original image, we need to click on “make selection” and let all the options from the message that appears as default and click Ok

Once we have clicked Ok, we have the selection of the man and we can cut it.

That is the final result

2. Quick Selection Tool

Let’s go to the second technique to Cut Hair with Adobe Photoshop, the tool that we will use now is called Quick Selection Tool, and it works great for cutting hair and have great results.

We will use this image for that technique, first of all, we need to select the Quick Selection Tool in adobe photoshop where you can find in the image below, and you can use the same options of brush that I used in this tutorial.

Once we have the brush settings set we start selecting the part of the image that we want to cut, as you can see on the image, there is a lot of hair out of the selected area, so we go back to the brush options and make it smaller and select the hair out and with the “subtract from selection” option we correct the background left in the selection.

Once we like the result of the selection area we click to “refine edge” option and play with the settings until we like the result and we can use the brush tool to correct the background color left on the image, for that image I used these parameters and I like the result, for the best results I recommend you play with Radius, Shift Edge and Decontaminate Color options, then we select New Layer on Output To and press Ok.

3. Background Eraser Tool

Now let’s see the Third Technique that I use to cut Hair from images in Photoshop, personally, that is my favorite technique because is very easy to use and has great results.

That is the image that we will use for that technique

Before starting with the Background Eraser Tool first, we need to cut the image with the Pen Tool, but let the hair and the background from the hair without cutting as I show you in the image below.

The next step is using the Background Eraser Tool to cut the hair in photoshop, we need to select the tool and I recommend you use the same brush properties that I show you in the image and 40% Tolerance (Note, depending on the image and the background you can edit these properties to get better results), next we need to click on the background (the part that we want to delete from the image) and holding the mouse button outline the hair as I show you in the image.

Once we outlined the hair and deleted the background from that part we need to delete the rest of the background, we can use the lasso tool and you only need to select the rest of the background.

As you can see on this image after deleting the rest of the background we can see that there is some noise around the hair, but we can solve it very easily using the eraser tool using these options we can delete that noise.
