Step-by-Step Tutorial: How to Use a Lino Printing Kit

Step-by-Step Tutorial How to Use a Lino Printing Kit_

Lino printing is a hands-on art ideal for all artists – professionals and amateurs alike. It entails carving a design or pattern into a vinyl surface, linoleum, or rubber, which you then print to create incredible pieces of artwork.

That said, your artwork requires a high-quality kit with trays, printing inks, safe-print sheets, and ink rollers.

Artists can use the Lino printing kit to create textiles, fine art prints, greeting cards, and illustrations. That requires learning how to sketch designs and convert them into beautiful prints.

However, knowing how to cut different materials, apply the ink, and create designs that stand out requires familiarizing with the following user-friendly tutorial.

1. Prepare Your Workspace

First of all, ensure that you arrange a comfortable workplace for yourself.

Put newspapers or plastic sheets on your surface to avoid any ink spills that may occur. Furthermore, arrange enough lighting for making proper carving details to the sheet and having water close by is excellent when performing cleanup.

Materials Needed:

  • A lino printing kit with a linoleum sheet, carving tools, roller, lino block and ink is needed.
  • A design sketch or reference image.
  • Pencil and tracing paper.
  • Cutting mat (optional).

Tip: Wear an apron or old clothes, as ink can stain.

2. Sketch the Design and Curve the Workspace

Sketch the Design and Curve the Workspace

Draw a sample of the artwork on paper, keeping it simple with bold and simple lines.

Once you are sure the artwork meets your expectations, transfer it onto the linoleum sheet by flipping the sketch face down onto the sheet and rubbing the back with a spoon or pencil. You can directly sketch the linoleum with a permanent marker or pencil. The print mirrors your design image, meaning you should write the text in reverse.

Next, lay down the protective sheet before setting up the ink, carving tools, and roller. You want high-quality paper to protect your workspace from ink, scratches, and potential damage. The best quality paper allows for easy clean-up of the mess while keeping your workspace organized.

3. Sculpt the Design

The next step is to sculpt a high-quality design. Get the correct gouge and the appropriate curving tool to sculpt appealing creations. That includes a U or V-shaped gouge and reliable cutting tools. You can use finer carving blades for thin lines and wider gouges for broader areas.

Start carving along the design, ensuring you remove the areas you want to keep non-inked. Focus on the raised areas where most inking will occur. Remember, you will transfer these inked areas onto the fabric or paper. Apply gentle pressure when carving, ensuring you carve away from your body to minimize injuries.

4. Ink the Lino Block

Everyone wants a clean job when they transfer the design onto fabric or paper. Therefore, you should ink the lino block correctly. That involves squeezing a small ink onto the ink tray and spreading the ink evenly using a roller. After that, roll the ink back and forth until the roller coats entirely with smooth and even ink layering. Avoid overloading the brayer with excess ink to avoid smudged prints and excess ink filling in carved-out areas.

Subsequently, roll the evenly inked brayer over the surface of the carved link block. Apply the ink from multiple directions, covering the entire raised design. Spread the ink evenly across the block, ensuring complete coverage. Be watchful when spreading the ink, ensuring you don’t overlook the edges. You want a smooth and consistent ink layer across the block while ensuring no messy prints or patchy designs.

5. Create the Perfect Design Print

The next step is printing the design you just sketched. The perfect way is to place the inked lino facing up on a clean, flat surface. Lay your fabric or paper on the block, ensuring it aligns precisely to avoid shifting and smudge moving the paper because that affects the design’s integrity.

Using a barren spoon to press your work firmly across the fabric or paper surface is wise. Apply pressure evenly, focusing on the corners and edges to ensure the ink transfers entirely. It is logical to move the barren in circular motions, pressing all the design elements evenly. That will guarantee a detailed and clean print.

6. Reveal Your Print and Clean Up

After pressing it evenly and ensuring positive results, reveal the print. You want to remove the fabric from the lino block from one corner and lift it slowly. Be slow and sure in your work to avoid tearing the paper or smudging the design. The print revealing highlights how perfectly the transfer occurred. Adjust the inking process and pressure in your next attempt to achieve the ideal outcome in case of uneven or faint prints. Allow the print to dry completely in a flat space to minimize ink smearing.

It is integral to clean your tools after the printing exercise. Wipe excess ink from the inking tray, lino block, or brayer with a paper towel or damp cloth. Wash your tools with soapy, warm water for water-based inks and adhere to the manufacturer’s instructions for oil-based inks. Cleaning your supplies right away will prevent inks from drying and hardening.

You are probably learning lino printing or want to advance your skills.

Getting the correct lino printing kit and tools will streamline the process and make your job effortless. Ensure you have gathered your tools and prepared the workspace before sketching the perfect design. Sculpt the design to your liking, ink the lino block, and transfer your design.

Once you create the perfect print, reveal it and repeat the process if unhappy.
